Master Thesis at Department of Architecture Engineering on “Functional Durability in local schools”

A Master thesis was discussed in Department of Architecture Engineering / College of Engineering / University of Mosul, entitled “Functional Durability in local schools. Design Characteristics Affecting the Spatial Compactness of Primary School Buildings” on Monday, August 30, 2021, submitted by postgraduate student (Muthana Abdulmoneim Mahmood). The concept of permanence is related to the concept of compact being. It is a positive indicator of functional permanence. Spatial compaction means compression or compactness in the space of the building’s space component. Compactness works to reduce the surface area of the facility, which reduces the waste of space, and benefit from it in the future to face future changes by expansion and addition. The thesis aims to determine the role of those design characteristics and the procedures available to the designer in accommodating change in primary school buildings, enabling designers to benefit from them in preparing schools with high functional Durability. The thesis found that the convergence characteristic has a prominent role in maintaining the compact entity of the schools, and it was also clear that when the convergence increased, the rest of the convergence characteristics increased in varying proportions, and therefore it was possible to rely on the convergence characteristic in the architectural programming stage, and dispense with other characteristics. The discussion committee was chaired by Assist. Prof. Dr. Imad Hani Ismail, and membership of Assist. Prof. Dr. Enas Salim Abdulahad, Dr. Khawla Fayyadh Mahmood, and Assist. prof. Dr. Asma H. AL- Dabbagh (Supervisor).
