Master thesis at Department of Electrical Engineering on “Performance Analysis of A Solid State Transformer for The Electrical Power Applications”

A master thesis was discussed in Department of Electrical Engineering / College of Engineering / University of Mosul entitled “Performance Analysis of A Solid State Transformer for The Electrical Power Applications” submitted by postgraduate student (Haitham Ahmed Obaid), supervised by Dr. Yasir M. Y. Ameen on Tuseday, Oct. 5, 2021.In this thesis, SSTs are examined with regard to their components, mode of operation, their mathematical analysis, construction and design steps and control methods. With the ANSYS Maxwell 3D software, various core shapes for the high-frequency isolating transformer were designed and modeled. One of the proposed designs in this work is to create a cavity in the magnetic material of which the core is made and to compare its performance after modeling with the other cores mentioned in the literature. On the other hand, the other parts of SST transformer components are electronic power converters, which were considered in this work in their different stages.With the MATLAB / Simulink software, simulation models of the three-stage SST were developed based on a modular multilevel converter, which is controlled in its first stage with the sorting algorithm. The single-active-bridge or dual-active-bridge converters are simulated and controlled in the second stage using the phase shift method. While the traditional three-phase voltage source inverter is used and simulated in the final stage. A prototype laboratory model of SST based on the active single bridge converter is also presented, and it is determined from the simulation and experimental results that it is in great agreement with the results of the mathematical analysis presented in this thesis.
