Master thesis on “Design and selection optimum drainage system for an earth embankment”

A master thesis was discussed in Department of Civil Engineering / College of Engineering at University of Mosul entitled “Design and selection optimum drainage system for an earth embankment” submitted by postgraduate student (Rahma Hussien Ali Aldulaimi), supervised by Assistant Prof. Amina Ahmed Khalilon Sunday, Dec. 19, 2021.The thesis included choosing an appropriate drainage system of constructing earth dams is important to achieve that the seepage run in the earth dams is within the slope of the back of the dam and to avoid the occurrence of the piping phenomenon (piping) and to reduce the value of the pore water pressure, which in turn affects to the stability of the dams, the selection of the drainage system. The most appropriate is one of the important topics in the field of dam design to protect these dams and control the amount of leaking water by implementing an appropriate drainage system by choosing one of the types of drainage systems alone or a complex system of two types of drainage systems, and the types of drainage systems are (Blanket, Chimney, Toe drains).In this Thesis, the Al-Qaim dam was chosen as an example for the application of the study, where the drainage system for the dam was designed and according to the design implemented in reality, based on the design on the method of manual solution and comparing the results with the solution obtained from the application of the program SEEP/W, which is one of the parts of the program Geo-Studio2012. The section of the dam was also analyzed with other types of filters, and the results were compared in terms of its effect on the amount of leaking water and the stability of the slope of the dam’s sides with the actual implemented design. The analysis was carried out for three types of drainage systems, obtained results were compared with the case of the dam without a drainage system. The program SLOPE/W was used to calculate the safety factor for each case of the selected drainage systems.From the results obtained, the highest value of drainage through the dam body was for the dam condition with a Chimney-type drainage system 1.0821×10^-6 m3/sec/m, and the safety coefficient was obtained with the highest value equal to 1.636 for the dam condition with the Chimney-type drainage system The chimney too.
