Higher Diploma Research on “Analysis of Retaining Wall on Gypseous Soil”

A Higher Diploma Research was discussed in Department of Civil Engineering / College of Engineering at University of Mosul entitled “Analysis of Retaining Wall on Gypseous Soil” submitted by (Noor Mowafaq Daod Sagman), Supervised By(Dr. Khawla A. Al-Juari )on Wednesday, June 29, 2022.The research focuses on the studying of lateral earth pressure of soil on the cantilever retaining wall constructed on gypseous soil, Also finding the settlement of this gypseous soil that is studied with three states which are, Settlement of the horizontal surface of the soil behind the retaining wall, Settlement with depth of the retaining wall and the effect of time at the settlement. Some factors had taken in consideration for studying which are, Height of retaining wall (5, 7, 9) m, Vertical applied stress on surface of the soil (50, 100, 200, 300) kPa, Vertical partial stress is at (0.5, 1, 2, 3) m from face of the retaining wall, Finally the effect of Ground water with infiltration and without infiltration. The soil that used in research was classified as a gypseous soil with gypsum content 32%, Silty non plastic and it was chosen from the region of General Fertilizers Manufacturing Company in Baiji. Also GeoStudio programm (2012) was used in analysis. The Results had showed that the lateral earth pressure decreases with the increasing of height of retaining wall, Also the settlement of surface of the soil increases with the increasing of height of the retaining wall and time, As well as the relationship between settlement of soil with depth of the retaining wall, which increases with the increasing of retaining wall.As the results had shown, The vertical applied stress is the most effecting studied factors on lateral earth pressure of soil on retaining wall and settlement of the soil. As well as when vertical applied stress increases, The settlement of soil increases for each of horizontal distance behind the retaining wall, Increasing depth of retaining wall and time.Settlement of soil with depth of the wall decreases with the increasing of horizontal distance between retaining wall, and transforming to increasing of volume of soil at depths near base of the wall, And it was noticed that settlement of soil decreases under effect of time whenever horizontal distance increased between retaining wall and location of applying vertical stress till it becomes increasing in volume of soil, When distance of applying vertical stress is at 3 m from face of the retaining wall.
