Master Thesis on “Investigating the Performance of Eccentrically Loaded High Strength Reinforced Concrete Columns with Unsymmetrical Reinforcements”

A Master thesis was discussed in Department of Civil Engineering / College of Engineering at University of Mosul entitled “Investigating the Performance of Eccentrically Loaded High Strength Reinforced Concrete Columns with Unsymmetrical Reinforcements” submitted by (Beidaa Yahya Mustafa AL –Obeidi), Supervised By Prof. Dr. Mohammed Najim Mahmood On Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2022.In this study, the effect of using asymmetric reinforcing steel in eccentrically loaded rectangular columns and the use of high strength concrete were studied and recommendations related to cases that can aid in utilizing high concrete strength by using asymmetric reinforcing steel. The current thesis included two phases, practical and theoretical study. The practical phase included testing eight reinforced concrete columns to study the effect of the following variables on the behavior and strength of reinforced concrete columns:a- The effect of concrete strength, as two types of concrete were used, normal and high strength.b- The effect of longitudinal steel distribution by using symmetric and asymmetric reinforcement and fixing the reinforcement ratio.c- Study the effect of difference in eccentricity of load, an eccentric uniaxial load was applied causing bending about major axis (Uniaxial Bending and Compression Loaded Columns). As for the theoretical study, it included a non-linear analysis of the eight columns simulating the columns in the practical program using (ANSYS V15) software and comparing the results with the practical results that were obtained. Additionally, hand calculations based on the American code (ACI 318-19 Code) were performed, and the results of columns strength were compared to those of the practical and theoretical studies.
