Master thesis on “Design Optimization and Vibrational Characteristic of Ultrasonic Horns for Welding”

A Master thesis was discussed in Department of Mechanical Engineering / College of Engineering at University of Mosul entitled ” Design Optimization and Vibrational Characteristic of Ultrasonic Horns for Welding ” submitted by (Zaid Tahseen Abdullah al-Dabbagh), Supervised By Dr. Ziyad S. Alsarraf On Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2023.In the current study, two main parts were covered. The first part focused on designing a special horn that is suitable for the application of welding, which the study was carried out to conduct five different types of integrated block horns with and without adding slots, considering the number of slots, slots positions and inclination.
The second part was conducted to optimize the proposed cases of designing horns and then to identify from the conditions in providing high amplification, good uniformity and low stress, which realizing from these conditions practically if it can ensure transferring sufficient power to the work.
The results showed that the equivalent stress of all horns has recorded below the yield stress of the horn material, while a case of the horn containing two parallel slots achieves maximum vibration amplitude of equal value 32.81 Micron and the best uniformity of the displacement amplitude at the horn tip surface is calculated at 98.8 %.
The discussion committee consisted of “Ass.Prof. Tahssen T. Othman as Chairman, Ass.Prof. Awaad H. Khider as a member, Dr. Abdulhaq A. Hamid as a member, and Dr.Ziyad S. Alsarraf as a member and supervisor.”
Then the decision of the discussion committee was read and included the acceptance of the thesis with granting the student a master’s degree.
