Master thesis defense on “The optimal treatment strategy of interior environment to provide environmentally friendly student accommodation at the University of Mosul”

A Master thesis was discussed in Department of Architectural Engineering / College of Engineering at University of Mosul entitled “The optimal treatment strategy of interior environment to provide environmentally friendly student accommodation at the University of Mosul” submitted by (Lena Natiq Yaseen), Supervised By Dr. Oday Qusay Abdulqadir On Thursday, August. 31, 2023.

The study aims to determine strategies to achieve thermal comfort and reduce energy consumption to achieve the study objective which is: finding a clear mechanism for the rehabilitation of the current university accommodation buildings to ensure energy saving and achieve thermal comfort for users by identifying appropriate design methods and technologies. Grasshopper simulation program employed to evaluate the existing hostel-building complex at the University of Mosul selected within the main campus.

The result shows that the combination of the passive and active systems is the best strategy, which used the triple treatments (green wall, movable facades and wind towers). These triple treatments reduced the annual energy expenditure by up to 38.82%, which is related to its ability to natural ventilation and temperature equalization of the interior spaces and ability to reduce heat, as the direct heat gain through the windows was reduced by 38.33%, and the cooling loads were reduced by 60.22%.

The study concludes the importance of employing optimal strategies in the existing university accommodation buildings to reduce energy consumption and achieve the quality of the interior environment.

The study recommends the application of the individual strategy ‘ movable façade’ in the case of limited financial allocation in the university.
