Master thesis on “Effect of Forming Die Shape on The Mechanical Properties of Al – alloy during the direct Extrusion process”

A master’s thesis was discussed in Department of Mechanical Engineering / College of Engineering at University of Mosul entitled “Effect of Forming Die Shape on The Mechanical Properties of Al – alloy during the direct Extrusion process” on Wednesday 7/2/2024.

The objective of the thesis produced by ” Zina Saad Abdul Jabbar” is: Designing different metal dies and manufacturing them to produce aluminum bars using the hot extrusion process, studying the effect of the shape of the dies on the loads and on some mechanical properties practically, and simulating the hot extrusion process using the FEM method to extrude a section of circular bars using the dies above and studying the effect of the shape of the molds on the parameters of the simulation program such as loads, stresses and temperatures.
The thesis included the design of nine internal molds of different shapes in terms of mold angles and the exit area of the extruded metal. Three different angles were chosen for the internal extrusion molds (15°, 30°, 45°), and three different diameters were chosen for the exit of the extruded metal (16mm, 18mm, 20mm). ) Depending on the acceptable extrusion shortening ratio.
This study showed that the angle of 15° is the best angle for the extrusion die, as it recorded the lowest loads during the extrusion process and was harder than the rest of the samples. This study also showed the possibility of using simulation programs to study the parameters of the analysis program using practical experimental data and analyzing the results obtained such as forming loads. Stresses and temperatures.
The discussion committee was headed by Professor Dr. Haitham Mohammed Waad Allah, and the membership of Assistant Professor Dr. Alaa Dahham Younis, Assistant Professor Mr. Amer Yahya Mohammed, and under the supervision and membership of Dr. Mohammed Najeeb Abdullah.
After that, the discussion committee’s decision was read, and it included acceptance of the thesis and granting the student a master’s degree.
