Master thesis in Department of Electrical Engineering on “Improving the Performance of Permanent Magnet Synchronous motor of Electric Vehicle by Intelligent Control Methods”

A Master thesis was discussed in Department of Electrical Engineering / College of Engineering at  University of Mosul entitled “Improving the Performance of Permanent Magnet Synchronous motor of Electric Vehicle by Intelligent Control Methods” submitted by (Ghufran Saad Mohammed), Supervised By Assist. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Obaid Mustafa On Tuesday, September, 2, 2025.
The thesis presented by Ghufran Saad Mohammed Abdulbaki aimed reducing torque ripples, enhancing dynamic response, and regulating speed with higher efficiency under varying operating conditions, thereby achieving greater reliability and efficiency for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs).
The thesis discusses The use of ANN with FOC to achieve precise speed, higher efficiency, and better reliability compared to conventional methods.

The results showed that using the proposed intelligent control techniques, integrating a PSO algorithm with a PID controller within a direct torque control (DTC) scheme, in addition to employing artificial neural networks with field-oriented control (FOC) clearly outperformed conventional control methods. They significantly reduced torque ripple and improved speed stability under varying operating conditions, while also increasing system efficiency and enhancing accuracy and dynamic response.

The current study is considered a sustainable study to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 9 “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure” and Goal 11 “Sustainable Cities and Communities” by improving the performance of PMSM motors in electric vehicles using smart control techniques that include integrating PSO with PID in DTC to reduce torque ripples and improve dynamic response.
