M.Sc. thesis at college of Engineering discusses ” Simulation of Flood Risks Due to Hypothetical Failure of Mosul Dam Using (IBER) Hydrodynamic Model and Management of Flood Warning System in Mosul City “

A Master’s thesis in Department of Dam and Water Resources Engineering / college of Engineering at University of Mosul discusses ” Simulation of Flood Risks Due to Hypothetical Failure of Mosul Dam Using (IBER) Hydrodynamic Model and Management of Flood Warning System in Mosul City ” submitted by postgraduate student (Mustafa Salem Mustafa Abdullah) on Monday, 21/12/2020.
The thesis aims to simulate the Tigris River flood wave resulting from the virtual collapse of the Mosul dam using the hydrodynamic model (IBER) in order to draw flood maps of the spaces between the Mosul dam site extending south of Mosul City.The study included the classification of flood areas, properties and parameters, which is to calculate the maximum flood depth, the strength and the time required for the flood to reach areas along the Tigris River.
The thesis concluded that the shorter the time the hole is in the dam, the higher the maximum discharge value is outside and that the effect of the opening times is greater than the opening width effect. The discharge time of the conductor dam reservoir during the collapse and the maximum storage level of (335) meters above sea level was 33 hours. It was also found that the maximum ovative discharge inside the city of Mosul resulting from the virtual collapse of the Mosul dam was 33,7182 cubic meters/s according to one of the approved scenarios. The number of human losses ranged from the population at risk of flooding throughout the study area when there was no warning time of maximum and minimum in the Khozni order of approximately (372958 and 17451) persons.
The study recommended that the dangers resulting from the collapse of Mosul dam should be evaluated, assuming Badush Dam is present, and evaluating the dangers resulting from the collapse of Mosul dam due to a rash over the dam due to a failure in Aleso dam, located in Turkey.
