Master Thesis on “The Role of Virtual Reality Technologies in the Reconstruction of Mosul’s Old City (Old Markets are a Case Study)”

A master’s thesis was discussed in department of Architectural Engineering at University of Mosul entitled “The role of virtual reality technologies in the reconstruction of the Old City of Mosul (Old Markets Case Study)” submitted by Noor Ammar Yassin Hamo Al-Sharif under the supervision of Dr. Omar Adel Sabah on Wednesday, 26/10/2022.
The general problem of the thesis emerged, which is “random reconstruction operations due to the lack of previous experience and the lack of documentation and its scarcity, so the practical experience of virtual reality was to provide this experience and help in making design decisions. One of the mechanisms of benefiting from virtual reality technologies in the reconstruction of the city of Mosul.”
And since the virtual reality literature did not clearly address the mechanisms and aspects of benefiting from them in the reconstruction, and also because of the random reconstruction processes, which do not fit the spirit of the place in the commercial part of the old Mosul, as well as the lack of documentation, the special research problem was determined: It is that the virtual reality literature has not clearly defined the mechanisms of benefit related to the issue of reconstruction in particular.
The thesis defined the mechanisms as a special methodology, which by following it can obtain studied reconstruction processes and preserve the identity and authenticity of the place. The research study exhibition, and from here comes the role of virtual reality technology, which helps in the formation of an important experience and the ground to help in making important design decisions related to movement, accessibility, organizational style and terminations quickly and accurately, which helps future generations to live with the demolished buildings or those in need of restoration, thus helping to visualize them directly It enhances the designer’s perception quickly and accurately.
