Symposium on “Impact of climate change on water resources in Iraq”
Under the patronage and presence of the Rector of University of Mosul, Prof. Dr. Kossay Kamalaldeen Al-Ahmadi, and the supervision and presence of Dean of College of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Abdulrahim Ibrahim Jasim, Department of Dams and Water Resources Engineering, in cooperation with Directorate of Municipalities of Nineveh Province, held its first scientific symposium for the academic year 2022-2023, entitled “Impact of Climate Change on Water Resources in Iraq” on Tuesday 17/01/2023 at Al-Furat Hall / College of Engineering.The symposium was attended by Dr. Raad Al-Abbasi (Assist. Governor of Nineveh for Planning Affairs and the official spokesperson for Nineveh province), Mr. Raad Ali Al-Hadidi (Director of Municipalities of Nineveh Province), deans of colleges, assistants dean, heads of scientific departments, and a large group of lecturers, employees, students, researchers, and representatives of Nineveh province departments.It was opened by reciting verses from the Holy Qur’an and reading Surat Al-Fatihah on the souls of the martyrs, followed by a speech by Dean of College of Engineering and a speech by the representative of the Nineveh province, then a speech by Director of Municipalities of Nineveh Province, and a video was presented about the projects currently being completed, and a lecture entitled “Climate Change and its Impact on Drought and Desertification” presented by Prof. Dr jasim Khalaf Shalal.The sessions started with management of Prof. Dr. Anas Mahmood Rasheed and Assist Prof. Ahmed Younis Mohammed, where a lecture entitled “Monitoring Water surfaces in Iraq” presented by Assist Prof. Dr. Alaa Nabeel Hamdoun (Director of Remote Sensing Center), and a lecture entitled “The Water Future of Iraq” presented by Assist. Prof. Dr. Khalil Ibrahim Othman, followed by a lecture entitled “Global Warming and Climate Change” given by Assist. Prof. Dr. Abdulmohsin Saadallah Shehab. The session concluded with a lecture presented by Assist. Prof. Dr. Omar Miqdad Abdulghani, entitled “Climate Changes and Drought Behavior in Iraq”.The symposium recommended several things, the most important of which is the afforestation of city of Mosul, especially the wind outlets to the city, and the intensification of the engineering effort to combat desertification through water harvesting, the construction of dams and large reservoirs and other engineering facilities concerned with water storage, the expansion of agricultural areas and forests, which are the lungs of the city, and the use of efficient irrigation systems for irrigation increased efforts by government agencies to mitigate the effects of climate change on water resources in Iraq in general and Nineveh prevince in particular by addressing the causes of water scarcity.
