Master Thesis at College of Engineering on “Design Characteristics of Educational Buildings that Promote an Effective Learning Environment”

Department of Architecture at College of Engineering, University of Mosul, held a master’s thesis defense on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, for the thesis titled:
“Design Characteristics of Educational Buildings that Promote an Effective Learning Environment,”
submitted by graduate student Ruaa Zuhair Jabr.

The thesis explored the role of architectural design in supporting active learning methods and the impact of flexible and stimulating learning environments on student engagement and skill development. It also addressed the design features necessary to enhance interaction and practical application of knowledge within educational spaces.

The study aimed to develop a guideline for designing schools based on active learning principles, analyze common design characteristics of international schools, and examine the potential for adapting modern schools in Iraq—such as those funded by the Chinese loan—to align with this educational approach.

The findings indicated that achieving active learning requires flexibility in design, diversity in spaces, promotion of communication and openness, as well as attention to aesthetic aspects that stimulate the learning environment. The thesis recommended adopting active learning concepts in future school designs and modifying existing designs to support this educational model.
