Scientific Symposium at College of Engineering on the Role of Educational Institutions in Psychological and Social Support

Under the patronage of the President of University of Mosul, Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmood Al-Ibrahimi, and under the supervision of Dean of College of Engineering, Assistant Professor Dr. Omar Mohammed Hamdoon, Media and Government Communication Division and Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Division in our college, in cooperation with Department of Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance at University Presidency, organized a scientific symposium entitled “The Role of Educational Institutions in Psychological and Social Support” on Sunday, June 1st, 2025.

The symposium was attended by Assistant Professor Dr. Omar Mohammed Hamdoon (Dean of College of Engineering), Assistant Professor Dr. Ayman Talib Hameed (Associate Dean for Scientific Affairs), Dr. Bassam Ihsan Abdul Qader (Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs), along with heads of scientific departments, a number of faculty members and staff from the College of Engineering, and other members of the University of Mosul.

The symposium opened with a speech by Assistant Professor Dr. Ayman Talib Hameed, followed by an opening lecture titled “The Achievements of the College of Engineering in Supporting Students Psychologically and Socially” delivered by Dr. Reem Ali Talib, Head of the Media and Government Communication Division.

The symposium also featured valuable lectures delivered by:

  • Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Ali Hussein Al-Jaffal (Head of the Scientific Research and Educational Studies Division – Nineveh Education Directorate)

  • Assistant Professor Dr. Nazdar Abdullah Mohammed Said (Preparation and Training Department – Nineveh Education Directorate)

  • Lecturer Dr. Batool Abbas Fadel (Preparation and Training Department – Nineveh Education Directorate)

  • Lecturer Dr. Ibtisam Mohammed Said (Preparation and Training Department – Nineveh Education Directorate)

The symposium addressed several key themes, including:

  • The preventive role of psychological and social support

  • Mechanisms for early detection and intervention

  • Life skills development

  • Challenges and proposed solutions

The symposium aimed to raise awareness about the importance of psychological support within educational institutions, strengthen the role of these institutions in prevention and early intervention, present successful models of psychological support in schools and universities, develop students’ social and emotional skills, and enhance cooperation between educational institutions, families, and communities.

The event concluded with a set of findings and recommendations, emphasizing:

  • Integrating psychological support into educational planning

  • Training academic staff

  • Activating the role of psychological and social counseling in universities

  • Strengthening partnerships with families and the community

  • Establishing psychological support units or centers within educational institutions

  • Adopting early intervention mechanisms

  • Organizing awareness campaigns within universities
