Our College in Brief

About The College of Medicine:
The College of Medicine at Mosul University is one of the most prestigious medical colleges in Iraq. The College was established on July 14, 1959 and it is the second of medical colleges in Iraq. In the first year of its establishment, the Ministry of Health administered the College. In 1960, it was transferred to be under the authority of Baghdad University for seven consecutive years. On 1st of April 1967 it became one of Mosul University’s colleges.
After the invasion of ISIS in 2014, most of the college’s staff left the city and the Ministry of Higher Education established alternative sites for Mosul University, including the Medical College of the University of Kirkuk and the cities of Zakho and Dohuk.
During the liberation of Mosul in 2016-2017, ISIS destroyed all of the faculty’s buildings. The College continued to operate in alternative locations after returning to Mosul. An alternative site was established at the College of Medicine of Nineveh University and then at the current site is a renovated building of the College of Agriculture and Forestry of Mosul University.
The University of Mosul, in cooperation with the Liberated Areas Reconstruction Fund, has built a new college on the west side of the city, which is proposed for completion in the near future.
The college consists of 11 scientific departments:
1. Department of Medicine
2. Department of Surgery
3. Department of Obstetrics and gynecology
4. Department of Pediatrics
5. Department of Family and Community Medicine
6. Department of Pathology
7. Department of Microbiology
8. Department of Biochemistry
9. Department of Physiology
10. Department of Pharmacology
11. Department of Anatomy

In addition to the various administrative units that perform all the administrative work of the college in accordance with the regulations and laws of Mosul University and The Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Iraqi Government.

The College of Medicine of the University of Mosul has a scientific journal entitled “Annals of the College of Medicine Mosul”. (ACMM)

It is a bi-yearly, open-access global scientific journal that publishes under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC-BY) license.

Educational programs offered by the College:

  1. Primary Studies Level: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB)
  2. Postgraduate Level: Diploma – Master’s Degree – Doctorate – Iraqi Board

Bachelor’s program details:

  • Academic Program of University Study: Medicine and General Surgery
  • Qualification awarded: Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and General Surgery (MBChB)
  • Educational system: annual, school years’ levels are 1-6

Postgraduate studies:

The College offers diploma, master’s degree and doctorate qualifications. The College also has centers for the specialization of the Iraqi board in which about 216 students study in the various board specializations under the supervision of members of the teaching staff.

Programmatic Accreditation:
The College of Medicine at the University of Mosul has obtained unconditional programmatic accreditation  in Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and General Surgery (MBChB) for six years from the National Council for Accreditation of Medical Colleges (Iraq) (NCAMC), which is recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).

Additionally, the College of Medicine at the University of Mosul has obtained another unconditional programmatic accreditation in Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and General Surgery (MBChB) for four years from the Accreditation and Quality Assurance Commission for Higher Education Institutions (Jordan), which is recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).
