*Department of Pediatrics*

*Overview*

The Department of Pediatrics was established in the College of Medicine in 1994, after being a branch under the Department of Internal Medicine. The late Professor Dr. Naji Abdel Rahman Naji was the first head of the department, which initially consisted of four faculty members.

*Vision*

Developing and increasing scientific and clinical knowledge in the field of pediatrics for students in the fourth, fifth, and sixth stages, and developing scientific research in the field of pediatrics.

*Mission*

The department employs various mechanisms to achieve its objectives, including:

– Theoretical lectures for fourth-stage students.

– Theoretical lectures and clinical training for fifth-stage students.

– Educational courses and clinical teaching for sixth-stage students.

*Objectives*

The department aims to:

– Provide important theoretical information for fourth-stage students.

– Provide important theoretical and clinical information for fifth- and sixth-stage students.

– Focus on recent developments in the field and update lectures for fourth- and fifth-stage students.

Upon completing the training program in the Department of Pediatrics, undergraduate medical students will be able to:

– Identify common pediatric diseases.

Acquire the necessary skills to take medical histories and perform clinical examinations for pediatric patients, and analyze the findings.

Possess basic knowledge of laboratory tests suitable for various medical conditions and be able to analyze the results.

– Master the skills of cardiopulmonary resuscitation for infants and children, lumbar puncture, and gastric tube insertion.

– Possess knowledge of using essential life-saving medications in pediatrics.

Organize scientific seminars on the latest developments in the field of pediatrics.

Conduct scientific research in the field of pediatrics.

Provide community service through the faculty members’ work in pediatric departments in hospitals.

– Supervise and train postgraduate students in the Iraqi and Arab Board of Pediatrics.

About the Department of Pediatrics

The Department of Pediatrics was established in the College of Medicine in 1994, after being a branch under the Department of Internal Medicine. The late Professor Dr. Naji Abdul Rahman Naji was the first head of the department, which initially consisted of 4 faculty members.

The first Iraqi Board course in Pediatrics was accepted in 1988 at Al-KhansaTeaching Hospital for Women and Children, in addition to teaching the fourth stage theoretically.

The department, currently consists of 10 faculty members, including:

– 2 professors

– 3 Assistant professors

– 5 lecturers
