Department of Biochemistry

Vision

Helping first and second stages students to apply all types of chemistry bases to solve individual and community medical problems.

Mission

Explaining the importance of all types of chemistry in solving community medical problems, focusing on clinical problems, and increasing the ability to effectively contribute in solving medical and clinical problems.

Goals

The goals of the department are to give important information in biochemistry and link it to clinical aspects, which enriches the scientific background of undergraduate studies students and qualifies them to deal with internal medicine topics during subsequent academic years by building a solid knowledge foundation in this aspect, as well as providing postgraduate students with sufficient information and training to increase their skills and abilities to deal with patients and provide the right service to the community through the health institutions they join

About the Biochemistry department:

The Biochemistry department is one of the basic medical departments at the College of Medicine, University of Mosul. This department has been unified with the Medical Physiology department since the founding of the College of Medicine under the name of the Physiology and Biochemistry department. The Physiology department split from the Biochemistry department in 1978 to form two separate departments. This department includes two main specializations: Medical chemistry and include the specialization of organic, inorganic, analytical, biochemistry, and clinical biochemistry. It is carried out through two lines: teaching the second stage and teaching master’s, Ph.D.’s and board’s students, broad and complex theoretical and practical topics. The first master’s degree in the biochemistry department was accepted in 1975. Since then, graduate students in the department have continued to be admitted to the department to date. The department grants a master’s degree to applicants from medical and pharmacy colleges. The number of graduates of the master’s degree in the department has reached about 60 graduates include university professors and laboratory staff who apply to the Iraqi Ministry of Health institutions. As for Ph.D. studies, the first group of students enrolled in the department in 2006. This is in addition to a large number of students of the Iraqi Board of Medical Specialties (Iraqi Board) in the specialization of pathological chemistry, who have received their training in varying periods by the department’s professors. The faculty members in the biochemistry department contributed, over different periods of time, by teaching various scientific topics in the specializations of (advanced biochemistry) and (clinical biochemistry) to undergraduate and postgraduate students in a number of other colleges at the University of Mosul, such as pharmacy and dentistry, as well as to students from other Iraqi universities, including Salahaddin University-Erbil (SUE), Tikrit University and Ninevah University. The department also currently contributes to teaching and training postgraduate students in various departments of the College of Medicine, University of Mosul, including the pathology, medical physiology and pharmacology department, in addition to contributing to the scientific discussion committees of university theses and dissertations for postgraduate students in the aforementioned specializations.
