Department of Medical Physiology

Vision

The Medical Physiology department works to make the student of undergraduate studies for the second stage in the College of Medicine able to comprehend the true value of physiology as it is the basic building block for the concepts of medicine and a basis for studying the various departments of medicine and acquiring future clinical and scientific skills.

Mission

The mission of the Medical Physiology department is summed up by emphasizing that the student of undergraduate studies for the second stage in the college of medicine acquires theoretical and skillful information about the body’s natural functions, in addition to understanding the importance of molecular and biochemical and cellular mechanisms in maintaining the stability of the body’s internal environment

Goals

At the end of the second year, the undergraduate student will be able to acquire practical abilities and skills in medical physiology topics to achieve the acceptable level of quality according to the standards of the College of Medicine / University of Mosul through the use and application of modern educational methods in teaching, developing the educational program and the research program, and introducing the community to the importance of studying the functions of organs. Through scientific and introductory activities and seminars. Through the use and application of modern educational methods in teaching, developing the educational program and the research program, and introducing the community to the importance of studying the functions of organs through scientific and introductory activities and seminars

Regarding the Medical Physiology department

The department of medical physiology was established in 1960. It was with biochemistry, and pharmacology in same the department. The lecturers in the department were teaching medical physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology to students of the college of medicine for the second and third stages. Then the rest of the departments separated from the Medical Physiology department and became independent departments.

Physiology represents the basis for the rest of the medical sciences, and the mission of the Medical Physiology department is summed up by ensuring that the student of undergraduate studies for the second stage in the College of Medicine acquires theoretical and skillful information about the body’s natural functions, as well as an awareness of the importance of molecular and biochemical and cellular mechanisms in maintaining the stability of the body’s internal environment. Postgraduate studies in the department began at the master’s level in 1970 and the Ph.D.’s level in 1992.

The lecturers in the department teach medical physiology courses to master’s and Ph.D.’s students in the department of physiology and in other departments of the college. Teaching the physiology course in the College of Pharmacy and dentistry at the University of Mosul and the college of medicine at the University of Nineveh was also one of the duties of the department.

The number of  students which have been graduated from the department over the past years were (43) Master’s students and (11) Ph.D.’s students.

The department is administratively affiliated with medical physics division, and the lecturers in this division teach the medical physics subject to first-year students in the college of medicine.

The department holds continuing education courses, annual seminars, participates in scientific conferences inside and outside the country, conducting scientific research to advance the scientific level, as well as a number of the department’s physician lecturers work in teaching hospitals to serve the community and provide medical services in support of the clinical departments in all fields of medicine (heart and lung physiology – lung function, infertility and reproductive physiology, and neurological physiology). The department’s lecturers also conduct scientific research to advance the scientific level.
