A Master’s Thesis in the Human Rights Law Department on the Impact of Violent Extremism on Women’s Rights
On Tuesday, April 29, 2025, the Human Rights Law Department at the College of Law at the University of Mosul discussed a Master’s thesis on the Impact of Violent Extremism on Women’s Rights. Professor Dr. Abdulaziz Ramadan Ali, Dean of the College of Law, and several members of the College Council and faculty members attended the discussion. The thesis, presented by student Dalia Mahmoud Hussein, addressed violent extremism, its concept, and the threat it poses to human rights, including women’s rights. This threat is posed by targeting women by restricting their freedoms and exploiting them in traditional or violent roles. The thesis also distinguished between violent extremism and other concepts by focusing on actions specifically directed against women, which are based on extremist beliefs that make women unequal or undeserving of their basic rights. The thesis aims to demonstrate that violent extremism poses a direct and indirect threat to women’s rights in various fields, including civil, political, economic, and social rights. Furthermore, women in societies affected by violent extremism face exceptional challenges, including the deterioration of their social and political status, and the violation of their basic rights, such as the right to education, health, and protection from violence. The discussion committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus Yahya, and included Assistant Professor Dr. Hala Muhammad Ahmad and Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Fawzi Zidan, with the membership and supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Suhaib Khalid Jassim.
