A master’s thesis at the College of Science discusses estimating the level of some hormones in prostate cancer patients

The Department of life sciences at the College of science at the University of Mosul discussed on Thursday 20 / 11 / 2025, master’s thesis tagged “Evaluation Level of Some Hormones in patients of Prostate Cancer” by student Nada shaker from the branch of Zoology. The session was attended by the dean of the Faculty of science, prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, the distinguished scientific assistant prof. Dr. Ryan Mazen Faisal, in addition to the head of the Department of new and renewable energies, assistant prof. Dr. Ahmed Mounir Suhail, and a number of college teachers.

The study aims to assess the impact of a group of hormones associated with the development of prostate cancer in the city of Mosul, by analyzing blood samples collected from patients with the disease and comparing them with samples from healthy people. The study included estimating the levels of both:

Testosterone (T), estradiol (E2), sex hormone binding protein (SHBG), insulin-like hormone (IGF-1), and leptin (L).

The message also included measuring the relative gene expression of genes responsible for the production of testosterone and(SHBG), in addition to evaluating the gene expression of the p53 gene, which is one of the most important tumor suppressor genes and responsible for about half of cancer cases in the human body.

The results showed a significant increase in hormone levels in patients compared to healthy ones, along with an increase in the gene expression of testosterone and the binding protein (SHBG), against a clear decrease in the gene expression of the P53 gene in patients, indicating the likelihood that these changes are associated with the structuring and development of the disease.

The discussion committee consisted of:

  • Prof. Dr. Owais Mowaffaq Hamed-Chairman
  • Assistant prof. Dr. Elham Abdullah Ali-member
  • Assistant prof. Dr. Fatima Qasim Mohammed-member

Under the supervision and membership of assistant prof. Dr. Firas Hamid akhdhir.

We wish our dear students continued success and success.
