A master’s thesis at the College of Science examines the role of Alpha-Klotho protein in autism spectrum disorder patients

The tagged master’s thesis was discussed at the Department of Chemistry at the College  of Science / University of Mosul, on Thursday, December 4, 2025:

Assessing the Role of Alpha-Klotho Protein in Autism Spectrum Disorders

The presentation was made by the student dijeen Shaaban Mohammed Khalid, in the presence of the dean of the College of Science, Prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, the head of the department, and a gathering of the Department’s teachers and graduate students.

The aim of the letter was to evaluate the possibility of adopting Alpha-Klotho protein as an important biomarker in the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and tracking its development in children, through the analysis of blood samples of a large number of participants in cooperation with centers specialized in autism disorders in the governorates of Duhok and Zakho. The results showed a significant decrease in protein levels in patients, which enhances the possibility of using it as a highly accurate diagnostic marker according to ROC tests and supporting statistical analyses.

The study also examined the impact of a range of demographic and health variables on the protein level, in addition to evaluating a number of biochemical and inflammatory indicators, which showed an increase in signs of oxidative stress and inflammation, versus a decrease in antioxidants and vitamins in patients compared to healthy ones. On the practical side, the study included the isolation and purification of Alpha-Klotho protein using a number of advanced laboratory techniques such as gel filtration and SDS-PAGE, confirming the vital role of the protein and its mechanisms of action in autism spectrum disorder.

The discussion committee consisted of:

– Prof. Dr. Elham Mohammed Hajim al-Khashab (chairman)

– Assistant professor Dr. Saba Zaki al-Abaji (member)

– Assistant professor Dr. Alia Farouk al-Omari (member)

Under the supervision and membership of Prof. Dr. Thikra Ali Alloush.

Our wishes to our students and professors for their hard work and service to the scientific career.
