The Department of Economics at the College of Administration and Economics, University of Mosul, Discusses a Doctoral Dissertation on the Impact of Economic Policies on Economic Performance

, The Department of Economics at the College of Administration and Economics, University of Mosul, discussed on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 a doctoral dissertation titled: “The Impact of Certain Economic Policy Variables on the Economic Performance of Selected Countries with Reference to Iraq,” submitted by the student Wafi Salam Sulaiman Al-Suwaidi, in Discussion Hall No. (1).
The study aimed to analyze and measure the impact of economic policies (monetary, fiscal, and trade) on economic performance by constructing a composite Economic Performance Index (EPI). It sought to uncover the nature of short-term and long-term relationships between these policies and economic performance across a group of countries with varying income levels. Furthermore, the research evaluated the effectiveness of the economic policy mix and identified the role of institutional and structural factors in explaining variations in economic performance among countries, with a specific focus on the Iraqi economy and analyzing its asymmetric response to economic shocks, particularly oil shocks.
The study reached a set of conclusions, most notable of which is that the effectiveness of economic policies depends heavily on institutional quality and the efficiency of transmission channels rather than the sheer number of tools utilized. The results also indicated that economies with diversified production structures and strong institutions achieve more stable and efficient economic performance. Conversely, the Iraqi economy suffers from structural imbalances resulting from its rentier nature and heavy reliance on oil revenues, which increases its vulnerability to economic shocks and limits its performance efficiency.
