A master’s thesis in the College of Archeology discussing (unpublished pottery dolls and slabs from the Gersu (Tallo) site)

On Tuesday, June 6, 2023, the Department of Archeology/ College of Archeology at the University of Mosul discussed in the hall of Dr. Behnam Abu Al-Souf in the college the master’s thesis entitled (unpublished dolls and pottery slabs from the site of Girsu (Talo)) And Prof. Dr. Mounir Salem Taha / Assistant President of the University for Scientific Affairs, and a number of professors and students of the college.

The thesis submitted by the student (Karrar Amer Attia) dealt with the study of dolls and pottery panels, explaining their industrial and cultural characteristics, and rooting the models in their true history through a specialized scientific and artistic study.

The thesis aims to study the results of the British Museum’s excavations from 2015 to 2019 currently in the city of Garsu in southern Iraq, which date back to 6000 BC, and to select models of 45 dolls and pottery tablets for study.

The thesis consisted of three chapters: It began with an introduction about the city of Garsu, its name, its location, its cultural roles, and the history of ancient and modern excavations..

The first chapter dealt with a summary of the dolls, the method of making them, and a summary of the pottery panels and their history. The second chapter was about the study of pottery dolls, which included the study of female and male dolls, as well as the study of animal dolls, and then the third chapter was about the study of religious pottery tablets and the study of secular pottery tablets, supplementing the study with pictures of the pieces and their drawing, tables, and maps.

The discussion committee was chaired by the experienced professor Dr. Jaber Khalil Ibrahim and the membership of the assistant professor Dr. Aba Dhar Rahi Saadoun / Al-Muthanna University / College of Arts / Department of Archeology and the assistant professor Dr. Ahmed Maysar Fadel and under the supervision and membership of the assistant professor Dr. Yasmine Abdel Karim Muhammad Ali / Dean of the College of Archeology / University Mosul.
