College of Archaeology

The Department of Archaeology at the College of Archaeology/ University of Mosul discussed the master’s thesis entitled (Islamic coins in the city of Balad (Eski Mosul) in light of archaeological excavations – selected samples) on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at the hall of Dr. Behnam Abu Al-Soph in the college. The viva was attended by Assistant Professor Dr. Yasser Jaber attended Khalil/ Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, Assistant Lecturer Khalis Abdul Karim Farman/ Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs, and a number of college staff.

The study presented by the student (Fadil Saleh Fadel) dealt with the archaeological city of Balad Eski Mosul and the Islamic coins discovered in this city. Islamic coins varied between gold, silver and copper, and these coins belonged to many Islamic eras such as the Abbasid, Fatimid, Ayyubid, Atabek and Ilkhanid eras.

This study tackled briefly on the historical eras to which these coins belong as well as the types of calligraphy and decoration executed on them.

This study aims to increase interest in the city of Balad Eski Mosul in terms of excavation and conservation and to limit the number of coins discovered in this city in relation to their types and historical affiliation.

The discussion committee was chaired by Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Kazem Abbas/ Al-Qadisiyah University/ College of Archeology/ Department of Archeology, and the membership of Assistant Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Hanu/ University of Mosul/ College of Arts/ Department of History and Assistant Professor Dr. Haitham Qasim Muhammad, and under the supervision and membership of Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Khader Mahmoud.
