**Master’s Thesis at the College of Basic Education Examines Semantic Change in the First Five Volumes of *Taj Al-‘Arus* by Al-Zabidi (d. 1205 AH): A Study and Lexicon**

The College of Basic Education at the University of Mosul discussed a master’s thesis entitled *”Semantic Change in the First Five Volumes of Taj Al-‘Arus by Al-Zabidi (d. 1205 AH): A Study and Lexicon”* on Thursday, 25 June 2026, in Umm Al-Rabieen Hall at the College.

The thesis, submitted by Sura Mohammed Abdul Wahab from the Department of Arabic Language, aimed to examine the semantic development of lexical items in the first five volumes of *Taj Al-‘Arus* by Al-Zabidi. It sought to identify the patterns of semantic change that these lexical items have undergone and to demonstrate the role of language use in the development of word meanings.

The study addressed the three major types of semantic change: semantic shift, generalization, and specialization. It did so by examining the roots of the lexical items recorded in the dictionary, tracing their original meanings and the new meanings they later acquired, and identifying the words that underwent semantic development based on Al-Zabidi’s explanations in his dictionary.

The study reached several findings, the most significant of which were that semantic change is a fundamental characteristic of language in use and that language use is the primary factor driving such change. The research also highlighted Al-Zabidi’s meticulous attention to tracing the meanings of lexical items and documenting their semantic development, thereby making a valuable contribution to semantic and lexicographical studies.

The examination committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Ahmed Saleh Younis, with Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Awwad Mizer and Assistant Professor Dr. Jassim Ahmed Taha serving as members. Assistant Professor Dr. Walaa Hashim Ahmed served as both a committee member and the thesis supervisor.
