The College of Basic Education at the University of Mosul discussed a PhD dissertation entitled: “Al-Qanun al-Wadih fi ‘Ilm al-Bayzara by Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Katbi, known as al-Watwat (718 AH / 1318 AD): A Study and Critical Edition”, on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, in Umm Al-Rabeein Hall at the college.
The study, presented by the student Zuhair Abdul Zaid Shamkhi, examined the book Al-Qanun al-Wadih fi ‘Ilm al-Bayzara by Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Katbi, who is considered one of the historians of the 8th century AH and one of the scholars of the Mamluk state. This book is regarded as one of the rare and important manuscripts in the science of falconry. Its importance lies primarily in its scientific content and secondly in its historical value. The book is also considered an important document that preserved the name of its author from being lost.
The dissertation was divided into an introduction, two chapters, and a conclusion. The first chapter, titled “Study Section,” consisted of three sections: the first addressed the science of falconry historically, the second discussed the biography of the author, and the third introduced the book Al-Qanun al-Wadih fi ‘Ilm al-Bayzara.
The second chapter was titled “The First Treatise: A Critical Edition of the Text of Al-Qanun al-Wadih fi ‘Ilm al-Bayzara.” The second treatise was titled “Mentioning the Diseases of Predatory Birds, Their Symptoms, and Their Treatments with Appropriate Medicines.” This was followed by the conclusion, which included several findings, recommendations, as well as appendices and indexes.
