Master’s Thesis at the College of Basic Education on “The Cultural System in the Poetry of Zuhair ibn Abi Sulma”

A Master’s thesis entitled “The Cultural System in the Poetry of Zuhair ibn Abi Sulma” was discussed at the College of Basic Education, University of Mosul, on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, in the Umm al-Rabi‘ain Hall at the College.
The thesis, submitted by Nawaf Nayef Taha Al-Jumaili from the Department of Arabic Language / Literature, examined several cultural systems manifested in Zuhair’s poetry. It demonstrated that his poetic texts were not merely poetic exchanges, but rather represented a cultural discourse reflecting the implicit systems deeply rooted in the collective consciousness of pre-Islamic society.
The study revealed the presence of systems related to social values, authority, conflict, and survival, and explored their role in shaping poetic discourse and reproducing prevailing values. The thesis also emphasized that Zuhair’s poetry constitutes an important cultural document for understanding the intellectual and social structure of pre-Islamic society.
