Master’s Thesis at the College of Basic Education on “The Rationale Behind Naming in Al-Maghrib fi Tartib al-Mu‘arrib by Al-Mutarrizi (d. 610 AH): A Study and Lexicon”

A Master’s thesis entitled “The Rationale Behind Naming in Al-Maghrib fi Tartib al-Mu‘arrib by Al-Mutarrizi (d. 610 AH): A Study and Lexicon” was defended at the Department of Arabic Language, College of Basic Education, University of Mosul, by the student Mohammed Ahmed Mahmoud Al-Badrani, on Thursday, August 20, 2026, in Umm Al-Rabi‘ain Hall at the College.

The thesis examined and analyzed the rationale behind the naming of Arabic words and terms as mentioned by Al-Mutarrizi in his book Al-Maghrib. The study demonstrated that Arabic words and names were not coined arbitrarily by the Arabs; rather, each name was given based on a particular rationale. The study of the rationale behind naming is considered an important area of linguistic research, as it highlights the extent of the relationship between a word and its meaning and examines the connection between them. Understanding the rationale behind naming also contributes significantly to clarifying the relationship between the derivatives of a word and their meanings.

The discussion committee consisted of:

  • Prof. Dr. Saad Mohammed Ahmed — Chair
  • Prof. Dr. Hadeel Abdul-Halim Dawood — Member
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Walaa Hashim Ahmed — Member
  • Prof. Dr. Amer Baher Ismir — Member and Supervisor

The thesis was approved with a “Satisfactory” grade.
