PhD thesis of the student ‘Osama Yaseen Mohammed’

Discussion of a PhD thesis at the College of Computer Science and Mathematics – Department of Computer Science titled: ‘Network Traffic Analysis and Prediction using Machine Learning Algorithms’ continued the movement of scientific research, with the follow-up and presence of the respected Dean of the College of Computer Science and Mathematics, Prof. Dr. Duha Bashir Abdullah. The PhD thesis of the student ‘Osama Yaseen Mohammed’ was discussed in the discussion hall of the College of Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Mosul on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Ahmad Saleh.
The study aims: This research work aims to achieve advanced performance in predicting network traffic, classifying it, and detecting intrusions. This is done by proposing new deep learning models to address the challenges of complex networks. The study addressed the analysis and prediction of network traffic behavior through the innovative (LrCNN) network, which includes a learnable dimensionality reduction layer to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the model. Additionally, a hybrid deep learning architecture using SCAR-Net was developed, leveraging deep separable convolution layers instead of standard convolutions with residual connections (skip) to enhance training stability and effectively learn complex patterns and generalization. The study also concluded with a novel network analysis inspired by the natural phenomenon of raindrop fall, aimed at detecting abnormal packet behaviors across the network.
