Department of Software Sciences
The Department of Software, College of Computer Science and Mathematics – University of Mosul, was established on September 22, 2002, as a specialized academic cornerstone dedicated to preparing qualified and well-trained national cadres capable of meeting the labor market’s demands in the field of software. Since its inception, the department has strived to provide a supportive educational and research environment that fosters creativity and innovation, while remaining closely aligned with scientific and technological advancements in the development and maintenance of large-scale, complex software systems of high quality and standards.
The department seeks to consolidate its scientific reputation as a distinguished center through academic and research programs that provide high-value services to the university and the broader community, particularly in the areas of software analysis, design, and implementation in its diverse forms. It also endeavors to prepare students with up-to-date knowledge and advanced techniques that enable them to design integrated software solutions capable of meeting the needs of both governmental and private institutions. Special attention is given to enhancing students’ practical skills and strengthening their ability to collaborate with related scientific disciplines. In alignment with the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the department is committed to implementing the Bologna Process in the first three academic stages (first, second, and third years), ensuring curricula modernization according to international standards. The fourth stage, however, continues to follow the previously adopted course-based system. By combining both approaches, the department ensures a gradual, well-structured, and smooth transition toward the comprehensive adoption of the Bologna Process in the coming years, God willing.
The department currently offers three postgraduate programs: PhD, Master’s, and Diploma. It also pursues advanced research pathways that contribute to the growth of software fields and meet the evolving needs of academic and industrial institutions. Great emphasis is placed on scientific research, particularly on publishing high-quality studies in globally recognized indexing platforms such as Scopus and Clarivate. Furthermore, the department actively encourages collaborative research between postgraduate students and faculty members across different scientific disciplines, thereby fostering the production of applied research that directly benefits both society and the labor market.
The Department of Software has already received institutional accreditation and continues to move steadily toward fulfilling the requirements of full national accreditation, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to quality assurance and academic excellence.”
