A doctoral dissertation in the College of Education for Pure Science, Department of Biology…

In fulfillment of the fourth goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (Quality Education), a doctoral dissertation entitled “Phytoremediation of Soils Contaminated with Heavy Metals Using Some Wild Plants” was defended in the College of Education for Pure Science at the University of Mosul on Thursday, July 31, 2025.
Part of the dissertation defense was attended by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Jassim Fatehi Ali; the Dean of the College of Education for Humanities, Professor Dr. Saad Ramadan Muhammad Al-Jubouri; the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, Assistant Professor Dr. Azzam Salahuddin Younis; the Head of the Department of Biology, Professor Dr. Yousef Jabbar Ismail; and a number of the department faculty members.
The study presented by the student (Ghazi Faisal Wasmi Al-Jabouri) from the Department of Biology dealt with the treatment of soils contaminated with heavy elements using some wild plants. This was done by studying the effect of three different types of heavy elements and four concentrations of each element, namely cadmium at concentrations of (3, 5, 7, 9) mg/kg soil, copper at concentrations of (70, 90, 110, 130) mg/kg soil, and lead at concentrations of (400, 500, 600, 700) mg/kg soil on safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) and galangal (Silybum marianum) plants, and the role of these two plants in treating the soil of these elements, in addition to studying the effect of contaminated soil on barley plants grown in the second season in soils previously planted with safflower and galangal plants. The experiments were carried out using a completely randomized design (C.R.D.), and then the results were statistically analyzed.
The discussion committee was chaired by the Experienced Professor Dr. Abdul Aziz Younis Talee, with Professor Dr. Janan Abdul-Khaliq Saeed, Professor Dr. Ibrahim Omar Saeed, Professor Dr. Qutaiba Shuaib Muhammad, and Professor Dr. Shifaa Mahdi Saleh as members, and Professor Dr. Hussein Saber Muhammad Ali as both member and supervisor.
The Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Professor Dr. Ibrahim Omar Saeed from the College of Science, Tikrit University, for his travel and participation in the student’s discussion.
The doctoral dissertation was accepted. Congratulations to the student and his supervisor on this scientific achievement.
