About the Department of Geography

The Geography Department is considered a branch of the humanities in terms of its objective and a branch of the sciences in terms of its content, as it combines several sciences and adopts a scientific and applied approach in study and academic research. Its main goal is to address the issues that relate to the relationship between humans and the Earth’s surface.

The geography department was established in the College of Education at our prestigious university in 1975 under the name of the Department of Social Sciences, including the branches of History and Geography. Then, the Geography Department became independent from the History Department in 1982. The evening study program was established in the department in 2007/2008.

The department seeks to develop the scientific and educational capabilities of students to supply the directorates of education with specialized teachers, as well as scientific researchers and postgraduate students at all universities in the country. The department has been a pioneer in introducing postgraduate studies, including the Master’s program since 1985/1986, the Doctorate program since 1990/1991, and the Higher Diploma in Cartography and geographic information system since 2003/2004.

the department follows a specialized scientific methodology in academic applied studies and research and supervises postgraduate students (Master’s and Doctorate) in the fields of physical geography and human geography, as well as teaching methods in geography since 2019/2020. It also plays a role in providing specialized professionals in cartography and geographic information system with a higher diploma to the various service institutions of the state, such as the Directorate of Urban Planning, Municipality Directorate, Agriculture Directorate, Directorate of Roads and Bridges, and others.
