Master Thesis at Department of Dams and Water Resources Engineering on “Analysis of Meteorological Drought using standardized precipitation index (SPI) for different time scale -a case study of Iraq”

A master’s thesis was discussed in Dams and Water Resources Engineering / College of Engineering at University of Mosul on “Analysis of Meteorological Drought using standardized precipitation index (SPI) for different time scale -a case study of Iraq”on Sunday,August29,2021 submitted by postgraduate student (Samah Mohammed Qasim). The study analyzed spatial-temporal meteorological drought for the period from 1981 to 2018, based on monthly rainfall data recorded for 18 stations distributed in different regions of northern, central, and southern Iraq. All historical data were analyzed statistically after compensating for the missing values. The missing data was found using both the arithmetic mean method and the relative method. The homogeneity tests were applied using four methods, the Double Mass Curve method was used to convert heterogeneous data into a homogeneous. So that all data became homogenized and ready to calculate the Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) using the fixed average method at different time scales (3, 6, 12, 24) months and different thresholds (SPI=0,-1). The maximum severity, sustainability, and magnitude of drought were also computed for each time scale. In addition, drought was classified for the study area. The discussion committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Taymoor AbdulMajeed Ibrahim, and membership of Assist. Prof. Dr. Sohaib Hasan Khudur Taha, Dr. Shatha Hazim Dawood, and under the supervision and membership of Assist. Prof. Dr. Abdulwahab Mohammad Younis and Dr. Omar Muqdad Abdulgany.
