A Master’s Thesis in the College of Medicine on the Effect of Zinc When Added to Metformin Treatment on Certain Biochemical Tests

The College of Medicine discussed a master’s thesis for the Department of Pharmacology about the effect of zinc when added to metformin treatment on certain biochemical tests in patients with type 2 diabetes which was submitted by the student Hind Y. Younis on Monday, 30th August 2021.

The thesis dealt with the effect of zinc when added to metformin treatment on certain biochemical tests in patients with type 2 diabetes.

It concluded that the zinc level should be measured routinely in type 2 diabetes and compensated for the deficiency by giving zinc supplements and returning it to normal levels; thus, restoring the balance in the levels of blood glucose, insulin and blood lipids, and avoiding major and minor vascular complications of diabetes.

The discussion committee consisted of Assistant Prof Dr Jassim M. Tayeb (chairman), Assistant Prof Dr Mahmoud B. Mahmoud (Member), Lecturer Dr Ibrahim M. Faisal (Member), Prof Dr Imad A.Thanoun and Assistant Prof Dr Nabil N. Fadel (members and supervisors).

Part of the discussion was attended by the Dean, Prof Dr Basil Mohammednather Saeed, the Administrative Vice-Dean, Assistant Prof Dr Hazim Kh. Al-Allaf, and some heads and teaching staff of the various scientific departments.

After the discussion, the committee’s decision was read including accepting the thesis with making the necessary modifications and awarding the student the master’s degree.
