A Master’s Thesis in the College of Medicine Concludes that Energy Drinks Negatively Affect the Functions of Liver and Kidneys

A master’s thesis was discussed in the College of Medicine, Department of Pharmacology entitled “the effect of long-term energy drinks on some liver and kidney function tests in male albino rats” which was submitted by the student Zahraa R. Al-Khayat on Tuesday 23th November 2021.

The study aimed to investigate the effects of energy drinks at different dose levels on kidney and liver function test and histological profile with oxidation and antioxidant status in male albino rats in addition to the possible protective role of bee propolis on the harmful effects of energy drinks.

It was concluded that these drinks negatively affect liver and kidney functions as evidenced by biochemical parameters and histological profile with oxidizing agents/antioxidants in a gradual manner and with increasing dose and duration of use. These adverse effects can be mitigated by simultaneous administration of bee propolis.

The discussion committee consisted of Assistant Pro Dr Zina A. Abdel Majid (chairman), Assistant Prof Dr Mahmoud B. Mahmoud (member), Assistant Prof Dr Ammar Gh. Al-Hayek (member), and Prof Dr Imad A. Thanoun (member and supervisor).

Part of the discussion was attended by the Scientific Vice-President of the Northern Technical University, Assistant Prof Dr Omar R. Mahmoud, the Dean of the College, Prof Dr Basil Mohammednather Saeed, and the Scientific Vice-Dean Assistant Prof Dr Humam Gh. Ibrahim. It was also attended by some heads, rapporteurs and academic staff of various scientific departments, directors of the Graduate Studies and Media Divisions, and a number of postgraduate students.

After the discussion, the committee’s decision was read with doing the necessary amendments to it and awarding the student a master’s degree.
