*Vision*

The Department of Physiology aims to enable second-year medical students to understand the true value of physiology as the foundation of medical concepts and a basis for studying various medical fields, acquiring future clinical and scientific skills.

*Mission*

The department’s mission is to ensure that second-year medical students acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills in normal body functions, as well as understand the importance of molecular, biochemical, and cellular mechanisms in maintaining homeostasis.

*Objectives*

The department’s objectives include enabling students to acquire practical skills and competencies in physiology, achieving acceptable quality standards according to the College of Medicine’s criteria, and promoting the importance of studying physiology through scientific activities and seminars.

*About the Department*

The department was established in 1960, initially as a single department with Physiology, Biochemistry, and Pharmacology. Faculty members taught Physiology, Biochemistry, and Pharmacology to second- and third-year medical students. Later, the department became independent, focusing on Physiology.

Physiology is the foundation of medical sciences. The department’s mission emphasizes acquiring theoretical knowledge and practical skills in normal body functions, as well as understanding molecular, biochemical, and cellular mechanisms maintaining homeostasis.

The department started postgraduate programs in 1970 (Master’s) and 1992 (Ph.D.), providing advanced education in Physiology.

The department teaches physiology courses to Master’s and Ph.D. students in the department and other college departments. It also teaches physiology courses to pharmacy and dentistry students at the University of Mosul and medical students at Nineveh University. The department has graduated 43 Master’s and 11 Ph.D. students.

The department is administratively affiliated with the Medical Physics Unit, which teaches medical physics to first-year medical students.

The department organizes continuous education courses, annual seminars, and participates in scientific conferences inside and outside Iraq. Faculty members conduct scientific research to advance the scientific level and provide medical services to the community, including:

– Cardiovascular and respiratory physiology

– Lung function

– Reproductive physiology

– Neurophysiology
