Vision
The Family and Community Medicine Department works to make the student in the College of Medicine able to understand the true value of applying the basic rules of family and community medicine to solve community health problems.
Mission
The mission of the Family and Community Medicine department is to make the under graduate students in the College of Medicine able to visualize the importance of individual, family and community health while emphasizing the most common community health problems by developing the student’s intellectual, behavioral and skill abilities to comprehend and actively participate in solving these problems.
Goals
At the end of the academic program for the Family and Community Medicine department, the undergraduated study student at the College of Medicine, University of Mosul, will be able to identify the cognitive components of the following topics:
- General epidemiology and evidence-based medicine.
- Chronic, non-communicable diseases.
- Occupational and environmental diseases.
- Diseases resulting from malnutrition.
- Primary health care.
- Health Management.
- Programs of the Iraqi Ministry of Health.
- Principles of family medicine and management of common acute and chronic diseases.
- Medical sociology and anthropology.
- Medical communication skills
- Medical statistics.
- Global health problems and the international classification of diseases .
- Introducing modern teaching methods into the curriculum.
About Family & Community Medicine department
The work in the department began since the establishment of Mosul Medical College in 1959, which was called at that time the Public Health and Preventive Medicine Department. Foreign and Arab professors were teaching until the national staff was prepared, Professor Dr. Abdul-Ilah Abdul-Mawjoud and Dr. Nazar Yahya Nazhat were among the pioneering Iraqi professors in teaching and scientific research application in the department by focusing on preventive medical aspects in Iraq in general and the city of Mosul in particular. The name of the branch was changed from the Community Medicine department to the Family and Community Medicine department in 2013. The branch was responsible for teaching the following subjects:(1) Basics of medicine for the first grade (2) Medical ethics for the second grade (3) Community Medicine (Nutrition and medical statistics) for the third grade.(4) Community Medicine and communication skills for the fourth grade.(5) Family medicine subject for the fifth grade.The branch is currently concerned with teaching the community medicine subject to third and fourth stage students in addition to the family medicine subject in the fifth stage since 2022 until now. The department has achieved a tremendous breakthrough in the development of postgraduate studies, which began in 1987 with the opening of the master’s degree, then the professional diploma study was introduced in 1991, which was transformed into the higher diploma in 2003, Ph.D. study in 1993, and the fellowship study of the Iraqi Board of Medical Specializations in Family and Community Medicine was added in 2000.In 2011, the higher diploma study in Family Medicine was introduced in response to the urgent need of the Ministry of Health for doctors specializing in Family Medicine, and the professional diploma study in family medicine was added in 2018. (Forty two) students were graduated for the Iraqi Board of Family Medicine (16) students for the Iraqi Board in Community medicine (59) Master’s students in Community Medicine (80) Professional diploma students in Community Medicine (35) Higher diploma students in family medicine (18) Ph.D. students in community medicine (9) Professional diploma students in Family Medicine in addition to students accepted for the Academic year 2022-2023:
- Iraqi Board student (Family Medicine) + (1) Iraqi Board student (Community Medicine) (4) Master’s student (community medicine) (11) Higher diploma students (Family Medicine).
- Postgraduate research included topics related to developing the health problems and primary health care services in Iraq.
It also included an assessment of the health impacts of the country’s conditions since 1991 with regard to malnutrition, communicable diseases, environmental pollution, and others. The department also played a major role in developing the field practice experience at the University of Mosul in 1988, which expanded to include all specializations at the University of Mosul, aiming to connect the university with society by providing direct services to the citizens of rural and urban areas of the Mosul City . Through summer living and joint committees with the Nineveh Health Service, the department also provided direct advisory services to the community in order to improve the health situation of the city and improving the level of services provided.
