The thesis, titled “The European Union’s Energy Security Strategy in the 21st Century in Light of the Russian War Against Ukraine and Its Subsequent Impact on Traditional and Non-Traditional European Security,” was presented by the student Rafi Manhal Mahmoud on Monday, 2 September 2024.

The research aimed to uncover the extent of European dependency in the field of energy security, to elucidate the internal and external strategic challenges to European energy security in light of international conflicts, particularly the Russian-Ukrainian war, and to explore the future prospects of energy security for EU countries. It also sought to highlight European efforts to innovate alternatives that would ensure the sustainability of European economic stability.

The thesis concluded that there is a significant weakness in the energy sector of EU countries, which has resulted in continuous dependence on producing countries, primarily the Russian Federation. It noted that overcoming this dependency is not feasible in the near future.

The discussion committee was composed of Professor Dr. Adnan Khalaf Hamid (Chair), Professor Dr. Saddam Marir Hamad (Member), Assistant Professor Dr. Rafi Sharif Dhannoun (Member), and Assistant Professor Dr. Tarek Mohammed Dhannoun (Member and Supervisor).

The Dean of the College, Assistant Professor Dr. Tarek Mohammed Tayeb Thaher, along with a number of faculty members, attended part of the discussion. After the discussion, the committee’s decision was read, which included accepting the thesis with the necessary modifications and granting the student a Master’s degree.
