The College of Political Science at the University of Mosul and the Center for Regional Studies Hold a Joint Scientific Symposium on Syria After the Assad Regime

The joint scientific symposium of the College of Political Science at the University of Mosul discussed the topic of Syria After the Assad Regime: Challenges and Prospects on Monday, 20 January 2025.

The symposium holds great significance, as the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria marks a pivotal turning point in modern Syrian history and the region as a whole, with opposition factions assuming power in Damascus. These sudden transformations have prompted major powers to reassess their strategies, while various actors seek to expand their influence in the new Syria amid concerns about a power vacuum that could be exploited by extremist organizations.

The symposium, chaired by Professor Dr. Jamal Kamal Ismail and moderated by Lecturer Dr. Afraa Riyad Mohammed, featured an opening lecture by the Dean of the College, Assistant Professor Dr. Tariq Mohammed Tayeb Zahir. This was followed by five research papers presented by faculty members from the college, the Center for Regional Studies, and the Mosul Studies Center.

The event was held under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Professor Dr. Wahid Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, under the supervision of the college administration, and in collaboration with the Center for Regional Studies. It was attended by members of the college council, as well as dozens of faculty members and academics.
