The Bayan Center for Studies and Planning Publishes a Policy Assessment Paper by a Faculty Member of the College of Political Science at the University of Mosul, Dr. Firas Mohammed Ahmed, on the Dissolution of the PKK and the Iraqi Options

The Bayan Center for Studies and Planning has published a policy assessment paper authored by Dr. Firas Mohammed Ahmed, Lecturer in the Department of International Relations at the College of Political Science, University of Mosul, entitled: “The Dissolution of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Iraqi Options”, dated 28 June 2025.
The decision to dissolve the PKK, as announced by its historic leader Abdullah Öcalan, along with the group’s disarmament and endorsement of this course by its field leadership, represents a significant turning point in the party’s trajectory. Accordingly, the paper sheds light on the regional political dynamics that have contributed to this shift—particularly developments in Turkey and Syria. It also examines the implications of this decision for internal Turkish politics and the future of Turkish military presence in northern Iraq, while reviewing the strategic options available to the Iraqi government in addressing these developments, including the reconsideration of the security memorandum of understanding with Ankara.
In turn, the Deanery of the College commended this distinguished scholarly achievement and the continued dedication of its faculty, extending its sincere wishes for further success and excellence in service of the College, the University, and the broader community, God willing.
