The College of Political Science at the University of Mosul Hosts a Virtual Scientific Lecture by the Director of Nature-Based Solutions for West Asia, Jordanian Engineer Faiza Al-Salihat, on the Application of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS)

In line with the Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 2 – Zero Hunger, Goal 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation, Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities, Goal 13 – Climate Action, and Goal 15 – Life on Land, and in cooperation with the Department of Studies and Planning / Sustainable Development Unit (at the University of Mosul Presidency), and the Continuing Education Unit (College of Political Science), the College’s Sustainable Development Committee hosted Engineer Faiza Al-Salihat, Director of Nature-Based Solutions at the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) – West Asia Office / Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, on Sunday, 21 December 2025.
The lecture addressed the application and integration of NbS in the Middle East and North Africa region. It included an introduction to the NbS concept and highlighted key environmental challenges such as water scarcity, desertification, and climate change, emphasizing the importance of these solutions for climate adaptation, biodiversity protection, livelihood enhancement, environmental risk mitigation, and support for food and water security. The lecture also discussed mechanisms for integration and implementation through planning and policies, multi-sector partnerships, capacity building, and green financing, supported by practical examples from Jordan, the UAE, Tunisia, and Morocco. NbS was presented as a strategic opportunity to achieve sustainable development, protect the environment, and enhance the role of local communities.
The lecture was held virtually under the supervision of the College Dean. Part of it was attended by the Administrative Assistant, Associate Professor Dr. Ali Hussein Yassin. The session was chaired by the Head of the College’s Sustainable Development Committee, Associate Professor Dr. Tareq Mohammed Dhnoon, with Mr. Hasan Younis Abdullah, Senior Engineer, serving as rapporteur and head of the Media and Government Communication Division. Some members of the College Council and a number of faculty members also attended.
