Master thesis discusses the environmental impact assessment of wastewater in the Tigris River and its treatment using algae

The Department of life sciences at the Faculty of Science discussed, on Monday, July 13, 2026, the master’s thesis tagged ” studying the environmental impact of some wastewater dumped into the Tigris River within the city of Mosul and the use of certain types of algae to treat this water ” submitted by master’s student Lazem Hammadi Bahr Wadi al-Janabi, from the branch of Botany.

The study aimed at assessing the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of some wastewater discharged into the Tigris River within the city of Mosul, and following up on the environmental changes that occur, as well as assessing the quality of water from the Kharazi stream to the Tigris River for various civilian uses based on the Canadian Water Quality Index, in addition to diagnosing the algae prevalent in polluted water and testing the efficiency of some of its types in water bioremediation.

The results of the study showed that the temperature values, Total Dissolved Solids, chlorides, sulfates, nitrates were within the permissible universal limits for drinking water. The results of the Canadian Water Quality Index also showed that the water of the Kharazi stream ranged between moderate and marginal classifications, while the water of the Tigris River came within the moderate classification, while the results of the irrigation water quality index showed that most of the study sites were of good quality, except for the first site, which was classified within the moderate level.

The study confirmed that the Tigris River within the city of Mosul has a capacity for self-purification, and the researcher was able to isolate and diagnose the algae Monoraphidium neglectum belonging to the green algae division, which showed high efficiency in carrying pollutants, which makes it a promising candidate for use in the bioremediation of polluted water.

The discussion Committee was chaired by Dr. Jenan Abdul Khaliq said Yahya, the membership of assistant professor Dr. Badia Abdul Razzaq Jamal Suleiman, and the teacher Dr. Hala Mazher Yacoub Youssef, while the message was supervised by Assistant Professor Dr. Abdel Moneim Mohamed Ali Kenah.

We wish our dear students continued success and success .
