A Ph.D thesis presented by Waad Khalid Khalaf Wais “Detection and Molecular Characterization of Trypanosoma Species in Cattle and Some Vectors in Nineveh Province”

PhD Dissertation Defense

A PhD dissertation was defended at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Microbiology, entitled:

“Detection and Molecular Characterization of Trypanosoma Species in Cattle and Some Vectors in Nineveh Province”

by the researcher Waad Khalid Khalaf Wais, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Wasan Amjad Ahmed, on Monday, March 2, 2026.

The examination committee consisted of the following members:

Prof. Dr. Munir Abdulameer Al-Fatlawi (College of Veterinary Medicine – University of Al-Qadisiyah) – Chair

Prof. Dr. Qais Talib Shukr (College of Veterinary Medicine – University of Mosul) – Member

Prof. Dr. Nadia Sultan Mahdi (College of Veterinary Medicine – University of Mosul) – Member

Prof. Dr. Haitham Sadiq Abdullah (College of Veterinary Medicine – University of Mosul) – Member

Prof. Dr. Layan Yaseen Khalil (College of Veterinary Medicine – University of Mosul) – Member

Prof. Dr. Wasan Amjad Ahmed (College of Veterinary Medicine – University of Mosul) – Member and Supervisor

In this study, 300 blood samples from cattle were examined using conventional and molecular methods. The parasite’s DNA was also detected in some vectors using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Genetic sequencing of the samples was conducted, followed by phylogenetic analysis and comparison of local isolates with international strains.

Species identification showed that T. vivax was the predominant species, followed by T. congolense and T. brucei. Mixed infections were also detected, including both dual and triple co-infections. Molecular analysis of the vectors revealed the presence and spread of the parasite’s DNA.

After the researcher defended his dissertation with scientific competence and confidence, and following discussion by the committee, the dissertation was approved.

Congratulations to the researcher, the supervisor, the College, and the Department of Microbiology on this scientific achievement. Best wishes to the examination committee for their continued success.

This defense comes within the framework of achieving the third Sustainable Development Goal (Good Health and Well-being), the fourth goal (Quality Education), and the fifteenth goal (Life on Land).
