Overview of the Department of Surgery and Animal Reproduction
The Department of Surgery and Animal Reproduction was established in 1976 and is one of the applied scientific departments that forms a foundational pillar in the educational process for final-year students. The department also participates in various field practices organized by the University of Mosul. It is responsible for teaching veterinary surgery, veterinary obstetrics, and reproductive technologies to fourth- and fifth-year students, in addition to clinical training at the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
Vision:
To achieve excellence and innovation in veterinary medicine in accordance with international standards, and to lead in veterinary education and scientific research, ensuring animal health through surgical intervention and improving livestock production via reproductive technologies.
Mission:

The Department of Surgery and Animal Reproduction is a vital applied science department that plays a central role in the education of final-year veterinary students. It provides fourth- and fifth-year students with theoretical, practical, and clinical training in veterinary surgery, female and male fertility, veterinary obstetrics, and reproductive techniques, alongside hands-on training at the veterinary teaching hospital.

The department also prepares specialized academic personnel by supervising PhD students in veterinary surgery and MSc students in veterinary obstetrics. Currently, faculty members supervise six PhD students in the research phase (veterinary surgery specialization) and two MSc students in veterinary obstetrics.
Objectives:

To provide students with fundamental concepts in veterinary surgery and animal reproduction.

To maintain contact with college graduates and keep them updated with the latest scientific knowledge through continuing education courses in surgery, anesthesia and radiology, obstetrics, reproductive diseases, artificial insemination, and reproductive technologies.

To serve the community through the veterinary teaching hospital and offer advisory services to government agencies, farm owners, and livestock breeders.

To actively participate in the annual field practices organized by the University of Mosul by providing consultations and performing surgical operations for animals owned by breeders.

The department includes 18 PhD holders (7 earned abroad and 11 within Iraq), in addition to 3 PhD students currently in the research phase inside Iraq.
