A Scientific Symposium at the College of Archaeology on the Occasion of International Museum Day

Under the patronage of Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul, and the supervision of Professor Dr. Yasmin Abdulkarim Mohammed Ali, Dean of the College, and on the occasion of International Museum Day, the Continuing Education Unit held a scientific symposium entitled “Museums in Iraq: Reality and Future” on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, in the Dr. Behnam Abu Al-Souf Hall. The symposium included two research papers: the first by Professor Dr. Nawalah Ahmed Mahmoud Al-Mutawalli, entitled “Specialized and Documentary Museums: Present and Future Vision in Light of Modern Language and Artificial Intelligence,” and the second by Mr. Ahmed Amer Khattab, Curator of the Mosul Civilization Museum, entitled “The Mosul Museum: Where Memory is United.” The symposium aimed to highlight the importance of museums in Iraq, as they are among the most important cultural and civilizational institutions that preserve the heritage of Mesopotamia, which extends back thousands of years. They represent a link between the past and the present and contribute to strengthening national identity and spreading historical and cultural awareness. This scientific seminar comes to discuss the reality of Iraqi museums and the challenges they face, such as the protection of antiquities, administrative and technical development, and modern display mechanisms, while looking ahead to the future of museums and their role in cultural, tourism and educational development.
