The College of Basic Education at the University of Mosul Discusses a Master’s Thesis in Islamic History

On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, the College of Basic Education at the University of Mosul discussed a Master’s thesis in Islamic History entitled: “The Judiciary in Andalusia during the Nasrid Era in the Works of Lisan al-Din ibn al-Khatib (d. 776 AH / 1374 AD) and al-Nubahi (d. 790 AH / 1388 AD)”. The defense took place in the “Umm al-Rabeeain” hall at the college.

The thesis, presented by the student Saba Mohammed Jassim from the Department of History (Specialization in Islamic History), examines the judiciary during the Nasrid era in Granada. It focuses on the nature of the relationship between the judicial institution and political authority, as well as the role of judges in political, intellectual, and scientific life, drawing upon the works of Judge Abu al-Hasan al-Nubahi and Lisan al-Din ibn al-Khatib, alongside relevant Andalusian historical sources.

The study aimed to uncover the nature of judicial organization in the Nasrid State. It concluded that the judiciary represented one of the state’s most vital institutions; however, its independence was not absolute, as it was influenced to varying degrees by political circumstances, the personality of the Sultan, and the balance of power within the state. The results also showed that the judges’ roles were not limited to settling disputes; rather, they contributed to scientific, intellectual, and administrative life. Some judges exerted a direct influence on shaping the state’s general policy, while others faced dismissal, exile, or restrictions due to their political or intellectual stances. Furthermore, the study demonstrated that the works of al-Nubahi and Ibn al-Khatib serve as an essential source for understanding judicial life in Granada, owing to their precise information on judges, judicial organization, and the relationship between the authority and the judicial institution, making them among the most critical sources for studying the history of the judiciary in Andalusia during the Nasrid era.

The discussion committee was chaired by Assistant Professor Dr. Okab Youssef Jumaa, with the membership of Retired Professor Dr. Faiza Hamza Abbas and Assistant Professor Dr. Ghassan Mohammed Hassan, under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Shaimaa Hussein Ali.
