The College of Basic Education / Department of Arabic Language, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit, hosted a specialized workshop aligned with SDG 4 (Quality Education) entitled:
“The Andalusian Muwashshah: A Journey through Origins, Evolution, and Aesthetics”
Presented by:
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Iman Suhail Salam
The workshop addressed the art of the Andalusian Muwashshah as one of the most prominent manifestations of renewal and creativity in Arabic poetry, highlighting its journey from inception to technical maturity, as well as its aesthetic, musical, and expressive features.
It began by defining the Muwashshah concept, the origin of its name, and the cultural, civilizational, and artistic conditions that fostered its emergence in Andalusia, referencing its key pioneers and figures. It then outlined its historical and artistic stages of development, detailing its stanzaic structure and core components—such as the matla’ (opening stanza), adwar (turns), aqfal (refrains), aghsan (branches), and kharja (final couplet)—while explaining its diverse rhyme and rhythmic schemes.
Furthermore, the workshop revealed the aesthetics of the Muwashshah through an examination of its poetic meter, artistic imagery, delicate language, and varied themes—most notably love poetry, nature descriptions, panegyrics, Sufism, and nostalgia. It examined the thematic presence of women, nature, memory, and time within the Muwashshah experience, emphasizing the role of the kharja in creating artistic surprise and emotional intensity.
The event was attended by faculty members from the department, postgraduate students, and a gathering of undergraduate students.
