Mr. Assistant Lecturer Mohammed Abdul Karim Bilal Al-Obaidi, a faculty member at the College of Basic Education, Department of Arabic Language, discussed his PhD dissertation at the College of Arts, University of Mosul.
His dissertation, entitled:
“The Generic Traditions of Classical Vertical Poetry between the Mu‘allaqat and the Poetry of Waleed Al-Sarraf – A Comparative Analytical Study”
was presented in the field of Pre-Islamic Literature on Thursday, 23/4/2026.
The study submitted by the researcher and lecturer Mohammed Abdul Karim examined an analytical comparison between the poetry of the Mu‘allaqat and the poetry of Waleed Al-Sarraf, highlighting the extent to which Al-Sarraf followed the generic traditions of classical vertical poetry in terms of artistic structure (the opening), poetic themes, language, imagery, as well as external and internal rhythm, in addition to the degree of innovation and renewal in these elements.
The study concluded that the poetic experience of Waleed Al-Sarraf presents a model of “renewed authenticity,” as he drew inspiration from the reference of the Pre-Islamic Mu‘allaqat to reinforce Arab identity while simultaneously developing their structure through the “humanization of ruins” and transforming them into an existential and national vision that transcends the traditional pattern.
Despite his commitment to the eloquence of classical Arabic poetry and the discipline of its rhythm, he succeeded in integrating poetic purposes and employing heritage vocabulary as artistic masks expressing issues of displacement and contemporary fracture, proving that heritage remains a flexible source for reformulating Arab existence in a modern voice that combines the craftsmanship of the past with the concerns of the present.
