A Master’s thesis in Modern History, entitled “Diplomatic Representation between Iraq and Iran, 1937–1958: A Historical Study,” was defended at the College of Basic Education, University of Mosul, on Monday, August 10, 2026, in Al-Hadbaa Hall at the college.

The thesis, submitted by Ali Jawad Mahdi Al-Atabi, from the Department of History, Modern History specialization, presented a comprehensive study of diplomatic representation between Iraq and Iran during the period 1937–1958. The study followed a chronological approach in presenting historical events and developments, while organizing them according to thematic unity in each chapter.

The study aimed to trace the development of diplomatic and consular representation between Iraq and Iran, from its early roots under the British Mandate through the end of the Iraqi monarchy in 1958. It also examined the impact of domestic, regional, and international developments on this process.

Furthermore, the study sought to clarify the nature of the British role in shaping Iraqi foreign policy during the Mandate period, and to assess the extent to which this role contributed to the delay in Iranian recognition of Iraq and restricted Baghdad’s ability to pursue an independent diplomatic representation during the 1920s.

The discussion committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ammar Yousif Abdullah, with Asst. Prof. Omar Faisal Mahmoud and Asst. Prof. Ammar Dhahir Muslih as members, and Prof. Dr. Mohammed Salem Ahmed Al-Kawaz as a member and supervisor.
