The College of Basic Education at the University of Mosul discussed a Master’s thesis in the field of Islamic History entitled “The Political Conditions in Egypt during the Mamluk Era through Badr al-Din al-‘Ayni’s (d. 855 AH) ‘Iqd al-Juman fi Tarikh Ahl al-Zaman: A Historical Study of the Period 648–689 AH / 1250–1290 AD.” The thesis was defended on Sunday, August 23, 2026, in Umm Al-Rabi‘ain Hall at the College.

The study, submitted by the student Safa Muthanna Abdul-Karim, examined the political conditions in Egypt during a significant period in the history of the Mamluk Sultanate, drawing on the accounts of the historian Badr al-Din al-‘Ayni in his book ‘Iqd al-Juman fi Tarikh Ahl al-Zaman.

The study aimed to highlight the most significant political developments and events that took place in Egypt during the period under investigation, particularly those related to the accession of the Mamluk sultans, the transfer of power, and internal political conflicts. It also examined the relations between the Mamluk Sultanate and the surrounding political powers, while investigating al-‘Ayni’s methodology in presenting historical events and the sources of his accounts, and comparing them with information found in other historical sources.
